Atherton neighborhood is one of the most elite in the country. It holds a mix of vast mansions and, well, more gracious mansions!
According to Bloomberg Richest Places index for the fourth year in a row the town of Atherton, California is the most expensive town in the U.S. With a little over 7,000 people and an average household income of over $450,000 it’s also home to some of the richest people in America.
Named for Faxon D. Atherton, a Massachusetts trader in tallow and hides, the town has a rural feel but with giant gated driveways to protect the residents’ privacy. Location is a big reason why Atherton is the perfect place for the super-rich. The town is 45 minutes south of San Francisco, and less than 20 minutes to the headquarters of Facebook, Google and most of the major tech companies in Silicon Valley. Google’s Eric Schmidlt lives here, as does Hewlett packard’s Meg Whitman, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and Charles Schwab, to name a few. The schools are outstanding and the living idyllic.
The town is located on the San Francisco Peninsula also called the Bay Area and is relatively flat with few sidewalks. The streets are overshadowed by towering Oak and Sequoia trees and many other varieties. Athertonians take their trees very seriously, the town has a Tree Committee and puts out a 10-page booklet entitled Tree Preservation.
The homes in Atherton are massive for the most part and usually built on one acre lots, or larger. The older smaller homes are fodder for contractors who buy them, tear them down and build mansions. Atherton is a great place for bicycling or walking. There are no condos, townhomes or commercial buildings. We know Atherton and look forward to taking you on a tour of this beautiful town.
