Housing is expensive and many of older homes have been remodelled or torn down and larger homes built. New condos and townhomes are constantly being added. This is a town on the move.


With a population of a little over 30,000 San Carlos’ growth had been slow until 1944 when Dalmo Victor established the city’s first large electronics plant. Currently it is home to pharmaceutical companies including Novartis, Apexigen and Sutro Biopharma and technology companies like Check Point Software and MarkLogic.


San Carlos was the first city in California to open a charter school, and its elementary schools rank consistently high in statewide lists. High school students have a choice of Carlmont High in Belmont or Sequoia High School in Redwood City.


San Carlos has a ‘small town’ feel and its busy downtown area on Laurel Street is composed mostly of shops and popular restaurants like Town, Refuge, and Creola. There is always something happening on Laurel Street from a local Farmer’s Market on Thursdays and Sundays where you can find flowers, fruits and vegetables and other treats. and in October an Art & Wine Faire where you can taste some of the area’s finest wines and microbrews.


San Carlos has a small airport which is home to over 30 aviation related businesses and you can have breakfast or lunch at the airport cafe while watching the planes take off and land. Don’t miss the Hiller Aviation Museum on Skyway Road. San Carlos offers an array of great things to see and do for the whole family from museums and art galleries to wineries, breweries, parks, reserves and more.
